Village Hydroponics at The McNeil Farmhouse

Village Hydroponics utilizes hydroponic technology inside of a shipping container to grow fresh, nutrient-rich produce even in the coldest and darkest winter months. As part of Burlington Electric Department and the joint owners of McNeil Generating Station’s commitment to supporting the community and testing new technologies, we have donated the space behind the Farmhouse in the Intervale for their unique facility.

On a chilly Wednesday in late November, we visited the converted shipping container and got a tour from Executive Director Nour El Naboulsi. The facility uses energy efficient lighting and a heat pump for heating and cooling to grow and distribute vegetables through the entire off season. Working with local organizations like Association of Africans Living in Vermont (AALV) and The Family Room, they are currently offering 65 winter shares.
